Dr. Dulan Perera

From Factory Floors to Brainwaves: Engineering with Purpose

About Me

I’m Dulan Perera, a multidisciplinary engineer and educator with a PhD in biomedical engineering and a strong foundation in automation, control systems, and data-driven research. I began my career as an R&D engineer and later as a factory automation project manager, delivering customized automation solutions across the manufacturing sector. My academic journey led me to explore EEG-based brain signal analysis for driver distraction detection, combining signal processing with machine learning. Currently, I serve as an assistant lecturer at Monash University, where I continue to pursue my passion for innovation, problem-solving, and mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Recent Research Projects

Computational Intelligence for Detection of Distracted Driving

Research project focused on detecting driver distraction using EEG signals, brain connectivity estimators, and machine learning

Development of a Helicopter flight simulator

Research project focused on providing the best possible simulator experience for novice pilots before getting into the actual helicopter

Factory Automation Project Summary

Summary of Factory Automation projects conducted during my stint as an R&D engineer and a project Manager

For me, engineering has never just been about systems and code—it’s about people, purpose, and progress. Whether I’m guiding students, solving real-world problems, or conducting research, my goal is simple: to create meaningful, lasting impact through thoughtful innovation and collaborative effort.
